Owing to its isolation, Kangaroo Island has suffered less than
mainland areas from the impact of European settlement. The Island has
retained more than half of its native vegetation. More than one-third
of the Island is declared Conservation or National Park and five
significant Wilderness Protection Areas have been retained. This
remnant vegetation supports a large population of wildlife and is the
reason why Kangaroo Island is, arguably, Australia's best place to see
wildlife in a natural habitat.
